Coming from Yorkshire, Great Britain the Yorkshire Terrier is a popular dog in the ‘toy dog’ class. Standing only six to seven inches high, the terrier weighs around 7 pounds and has a life span of between 12 and 15 years.

Created by the working man in the 19th century to trap rodents such as mice and rats the Yorkshire Terrier is thought to have ascended from Scotland and is genetically linked to other breeds like the Skye Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Scottish Terrier although not the dogs that we see today. Over time the breed has been miniaturized and is a now a well known choice for a ladies companion as they fit nicely into a bag.

The Yorkshire Terriers coat is moderately long glossy, fine and silky in texture and lots of owners part the hair on their head to allow them to see and eat properly. Born with tan and black coats which changes as they mature to steal blue and tan, in some countries, where it’s permitted, their tails are docked to medium length.

Although a wonderful canine breed, purchasers must be aware that Terriers are susceptible to many disorders. Some examples are Hypoglycaemia, Patellar Luxation, Tracheal Collapse, Porto-Systemic Shunt and Retinal Dysphasia.

Hypoglycaemia is common amongst small breed puppies and is often misdiagnosed and although it is easily treated if not dealt with it can be fatal.

Patellar Luxation is a condition caused by the knee cap slipping out of its groove and although not life threatening can cause mild pain if left unattended.

Brought on by being overweight, age or sometimes inherited, Tracheal Collapse is the narrowing of the inner diameter of the trachea.

Porto-Systemic Shunt is an abnormal blood flow to the liver and is probably the most feared disorders by all Yorkie owners.

Typically present at birth, Retinal Dysphasia is an abnormal development in the retina. Though typically inherited, it can also be acquired from the consequence of an infection

Having said that in general Yorkshire Terriers are actually excellent pets and companions and even with a number of disorders can lead a long and healthy life.
