The Truth About The Shock Dog Barking Collar

Posted April 27th, 2010 by admin

One of the most common behavior problems in dogs is barking. There are a few dogs that don’t excercise any control over their barking, especially if they weren’t trained when they were puppies. It can be cute when they are younger and are quietly yipping and barking here and there but once they get a bit older and start to bark incessantly it can drive you nuts.

Not only is this likely going to turn into a problem for you but also for others around you. Among other things, guests that come to your house may be scared of the dog, or just find it hard to carry a conversation; and if the barking takes place at night, your neighbors will not be able to sleep. Manufacturers of pet products have come up with several methods to deal with this problem.

One of the most controversial is the shock dog barking collar. As you would expect from a collar named like that, it gives your dog a small shock when it starts to bark. The shock will distract the dog from the object it was barking at, and the dog will stop and try to figure out what caused the shock, until it makes the connection between the barking and the shock. As a result, it will stop barking because it does not want to get shocked.

Is It A Cruel Training Method?

There are a lot of dog owners who rely on this type of dog barking collar but there are a lot of others who feel as though this is a cruel training method to use on a dog. The latter think your dog is supposed to be your friend and a part of the family and the shocks are just too much. They say that electrical shocks are always painful and harmful, no matter how mild they are.

If you really want to know what the collar feels like, you can put it on and test it, although it requires a bit of bravery.

Consider that a dog’s resistance to pain is greater than a human; nevertheless, if you think that the shock is too intense for your dog, there are other products that you can try. There are even other types of anti bark collars your dog can wear. Instead of the shock dog barking collar it could wear the citronella collar. This collar is not painful because it corrects dogs with a spray of smell of citronella, as opposed to the electrical shock that many people find controversial. Citronella oil is what is used to repel mosquitoes so it is quite a strong scent and your dog will learn to stop barking to avoid having this stuff sprayed.
