Tasty Treats For Healthy Dogs

Posted March 27th, 2010 by admin

The food you give to your dog really does have a direct impact on his health and well-being.

One of the most important elements of dog food is protein. A healthy, mature dog needs around 18% protein in its daily diet and this level increases for puppies and reproducing dogs.Fat is important, with a healthy dog requiring about 5% fat in its daily feeding regime. It is important to balance protein and fats to ensure you don’t over feed one or the other.Just like humans, fat initially makes you feel very full. However, it does not nourish the dog and the dog will quickly feel hungry again leading to over eating and weight gain.

Commercial dog food is a popular option for many dog owners and it gives you control over what you are feeding to your dog. Always read the label as quality can vary. When possible but a premium food from a trusted brand. If you mix commercial dog food with homemade food remember to keep your eye on the fat levels. The last thing you want is a fussy dog, so bear the following in mind…

1. Two meals a day are sufficient for an adult dog. If you feed several small meals per day your dog may be more inclined to over eat and beg for food.

2. Don’t stand and stare at your dog waiting for him to eat. He will likely think something is wrong, or something else is coming, and won’t eat.

3. Remember, you are in charge. If your dog will not eat the food you have provided don’t be too quick to back down and feed something else. By backing down you are allowing him to be fussy.

4. Try and vary the diet as much as possible but avoid changing the food simply because your dog refuses to eat it.If your dog keeps refusing food you should check to see if there is anything else wrong with him as he may be poorly.

If your dog suddenly becomes fussy he may have a physical problem like sore teeth, or a stomach upset. In this case take him to the vet.

6. Some dogs do actually prefer a certain type of food, just as people do.Try your dog with a variety of foods, and if he only eats one type, and will starve himself if he doesn’t get it, the best solution can simply be to feed him that type of food.

7. Don’t feed your dog a high fat diet, or junk food, including chocolate. It’s not good for them.
