Does Puppy Farming Affect Dog Health Care?

Posted March 19th, 2010 by admin

Anybody considering bringing home a new puppy should carefully consider where to buy it from.If you buy a puppy from the wrong source you might end up with heart breaking dog health care problems on your hands. This is because of the danger of unwittingly buying a puppy who was born in a puppy farm.

Dog health care is a long way down the list of priorities for puppy farms and their proprietors. In fact, farmed puppies are unlikely to be healthy. Those puppies who have been farmed frequently fall victim to physical and psychological illness. They also frequently demonstrate problem behaviour.

The problems arise from the conditions in which the puppies are kept. Preoccupation with profit means that conditions are almost certainly poor. The dogs have little or no space to exercise and nearly no contact with humans.

Health wise the dogs suffer too. They are fed poor quality foods in small quantities and mother dogs are malnourished. From four months old, female dogs enter a cycle of constant breeding until they die or become too weak to continue. Mothers and puppies alike are left unwell because of such frequent breeding. Mothers and puppies are normally separated too soon so that the babies can be sold and she can breed again. All of this and a lack of human contact causes dog health care problems and extreme behavioural disorders.

Unfortunately, shop-bought puppies are almost certainly sourced from puppy farms, so it is not a good idea to buy from pet shops. It is also difficult to be sure where puppies in internet or newspaper adverts have come from. This is why anybody considering buying a puppy from an advert should insist on seeing the puppies with their mother and even the father if possible. If excuses are made, the seller shouldn’t be trusted. Although farm puppies may be tempted because they may be cheaper than others, the vet bills and long term heart break outweigh the small saving. Ask dog owning friends and family for breeder recommendations instead of buying a farmed puppy.
