All dog owners know the inherent frustration pups can evoke when you call them and they don’t come. Whether you’re asking them to come into the next room or come inside from the yard, a dog that doesn’t listen can easily become a bad dog. There are ways, however, to make sure that your dog not only comes when you call him but comes quickly, willingly, and happily.

First things first. It’s easy to get annoyed when you call your dog and nothing happens. Maybe the dog sees you and ignores you or maybe he’s out of sight and the command “come” illicit no response. When you do finally get your dog’s attention, make sure that you are friendly and avoid using the word “come.” Why? If you call and call your dog using the “come” command while growing increasingly more and more angry, the dog will quickly associate the “come” command with trouble. For example, you spot your dog digging holes in the yard. You yell for him to come and he does. Then, next thing he knows, he’s being taken to the scene of the crime and being scolded for bad behavior. He will certainly attach your “come” command to a punishment.
How can you avoid this? If you are training a new puppy, begin with daily lessons lasting about five minutes in length. Make sure they’re wearing a collar and take them outside. Hook on a long leash and let them wander around. After a few seconds, say “come” and offer a light tug on the leash. When the puppy acknowledges you, speak in a happy voice while repeating the “come” command. When the puppy arrives to you, be sure to reward them with a treat. This same tactic can be used on an older dog.
The most difficult part of teaching a dog the come command may be containing our own frustration. Remember that dog’s don’t know what we’re saying; they know the tone in which it’s being said. So while teaching a puppy or an older dog the command, if you feel frustrated, it’s ok to voice it, just do so in a happy tone. If you say “I can’t believe you took so long and ate that plant. I am so mad at you,” it’ll sound like praise as long as you keep a happy tone. Work with your dog several times a day and, remember, keep your cool. You and your dog will be better for it.
